Director Ravi Jadhav’s ambitious venture, “Main Atal Hoon,” aimed to delve into the alternative idea of India, tracing the remarkable journey of poet-politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, despite an initially compelling narrative, the film ends up as a somewhat lackluster portrayal punctuated by powerful speeches.

Based on journalist Sarang Darshane’s biography of the former Prime Minister, the film provides a broad-strokes depiction of Vajpayee’s colorful personality, offering a glimpse into the man behind the rise of right-wing politics in India. Beginning as a young poet on the banks of the Yamuna, Vajpayee’s perspective on the laborers behind the Taj Mahal and his emergence as the voice of an alternative India are engaging starting points. Yet, as the film progresses, it transitions into a collection of well-known speeches and achievements easily accessible on the Internet.

While Pankaj Tripathi delivers a commendable performance, capturing Vajpayee’s magnetic persona and oratorical skills, the film is hindered by a somewhat uninspired script. The director, Ravi Jadhav, appears to play it safe, offering little insight into the conservative mind’s evolution or how Vajpayee’s worldview was shaped. The film’s focus on adulation rather than assessment leaves gaps in understanding Vajpayee’s thoughts on figures like Gandhi, his relationships, and how some of his liberal ideas faced opposition within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Despite Tripathi’s efforts, the film struggles with sincere but glib writing and lacks imaginative sound and production design. Jadhav doesn’t delve into Vajpayee’s doublespeak on controversial issues or the conflicts within the BJP. There are glimpses into Vajpayee’s personal life and conflicted views, but these moments do not penetrate the surface.

The film overlooks crucial aspects of Vajpayee’s life, such as his stance on non-vegetarian food and liquor, the influence of foreign visits on his progressive outlook, and the voices of opponents and critics within the Jan Sangh and Sangh Parivar. The portrayal of key figures like Lal Krishna Advani disappoints, reducing them to caricatures.

While the film highlights Vajpayee’s critique of the undemocratic practices of the Congress, it fails to explore his complex relationships and the dynamics within the BJP. The post-intermission section feels like a recitation of BJP manifestoes, omitting significant events like the Kandahar Hijack.

Despite these shortcomings, “Main Atal Hoon” inadvertently captures moments of Vajpayee’s impactful speeches, reminding viewers of a time when the ideological divide was more porous. In today’s context, the film’s revision provides meta moments where Vajpayee’s fiery words after the Emergency resonate as relevant critiques of crony capitalism and the arrogance of power.
